A once-daily semaglutide tablet has been the medicine people ask about most this year. The United States licensed a Wegovy tablet in December 2025. The United Kingdom followed in June 2026. By early autumn, clinics were also sharing early experience from adults who had moved from a weekly injection to that daily tablet. The useful questions are what the tablet is, and which strength is named on a prescription.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 medicine. Taken by mouth, it is absorbed with the help of an ingredient in the tablet, which is why the usual directions say to swallow it whole, on an empty stomach, with a little water, and to wait before breakfast or other tablets. The leaflet in the pack is the reference for that routine.
Strengths you will see on a prescription
Oral semaglutide is made in two families of tablets.
One family is 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg. On many plans the 3 mg tablet is the first strength, and 7 mg or 14 mg is where a prescriber settles if that strength suits the person. This is the oral semaglutide long used in type 2 diabetes.
The newer weight-management tablet, Wegovy, is made as 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. The 25 mg tablet is the usual ongoing strength on that label. A prescription that names 25 mg is referring to that tablet. A prescription that names 7 mg or 14 mg is referring to the other family. The number on the foil is the one to compare with the prescription.
Weekly injection, daily tablet
Semaglutide is also supplied as a once-weekly injection. A pen and a tablet can both suit different adults. The milligrams are written differently because the body receives them differently: a weekly pen might say 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg or 2.4 mg, while a tablet says 3 mg, 7 mg, 14 mg, or one of the Wegovy tablet strengths. A prescriber chooses the form and the strength for that person.
What is licensed where
In the United States and the United Kingdom, the daily Wegovy tablet is a licensed medicine for eligible adults, used with a lower-calorie diet and more activity. In Australia, Wegovy on the ARTG in October 2026 was the injection, and the oral semaglutide tablet already registered there is the 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg medicine used in type 2 diabetes. In New Zealand, Medsafe consent for Wegovy is for the injection pens.
Anyone who is pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding can mention that to a prescriber, and the same is true for a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2.
