How it works
Ivermectin binds invertebrate glutamate-gated chloride channels, which can paralyse susceptible parasites so the body can clear them. Host toxicity differs because of species differences in those channels, but the medicine still needs medical supervision, especially at higher tablet strengths.
Take exactly as a doctor or pharmacist sets for the infection, age and weight involved. Do not copy internet protocols or add extra farm or veterinary ivermectin. Complete the advised course unless you are told to stop.
Tell a clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, other medicines and Loa loa risk before ivermectin. Possible effects include dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, headache or itch. Seek care for rash, jaundice, seizures or allergic swelling. Keep away from children. Not for COVID-19 unless a licensed clinician has a separate, authorised reason.
