How it works
Ivermectin binds invertebrate glutamate-gated chloride channels, paralysing susceptible parasites. Mebendazole binds parasite beta-tubulin, blocking microtubules so the worm cannot absorb glucose. Dead worms are passed in stool. Host toxicity differs because of species differences in those targets, but both drugs still need medical supervision.
Take exactly as a doctor or pharmacist sets for the infection, age and weight involved. Do not copy internet protocols or use this combination for COVID-19 or other viral illness. Complete the advised course unless you are told to stop.
Tell a clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, other medicines and Loa loa risk before ivermectin. Mebendazole can cause abdominal pain as worms die; high-dose long courses may affect liver enzymes or blood counts. Seek care for rash, jaundice, severe diarrhoea, seizures or allergic swelling. Keep away from children.
