Eltroxin and Thyronorm are thyroxine sodium tablets, also called levothyroxine. A clinician sets the microgram from symptoms and blood tests. This note is about the usual way those tablets are taken. It is not a dose plan, and it is not a reason to change a strength that is already in use.
The Thyroid catalog lists both brands. Eltroxin is GlaxoSmithKline. Thyronorm is Abbott. Take the brand and the microgram on the plan you were given. Follow the leaflet in the bottle you receive.
Same time, before food
The usual direction is once a day, at the same time, on an empty stomach, swallowed with water, and at least 30 minutes before food. People often use the time before breakfast so the tablet is not sitting with a meal.
A missed morning is a question for the clinician or the leaflet, not a reason to take two tablets the next day. Do not line the day’s dose up with a larger bottle because the pack lasts longer.
Calcium, iron, and antacids
Calcium, iron, and antacids can block absorption. Leave a gap of several hours between the thyroxine tablet and those products. That includes calcium in a supplement and iron in a separate tablet, not only a prescription.
Other morning medicines, including diabetes treatment and warfarin, belong in the list you give the clinician. Thyroxine can change how some of those medicines act. Say so before you order if you have heart disease, adrenal or pituitary disease, diabetes, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The bottle is a supply
Checkout sells 120, 240, 360, 600, or 1200 tablets. Most bottles are labelled 120 tablets. The Eltroxin 88 mcg bottle is labelled 60 tablets, and that strength is still sold in the same five counts. A long supply is not a higher daily dose.
Too much thyroxine can cause palpitations, tremor, sweating, insomnia, or chest pain. Chest pain, a severe headache, or a very fast heartbeat is urgent care. Thyroxine is not a weight-loss tablet when thyroid tests are normal.
